Do I Have Mold In My Air Conditioner?
Yes….and no. It depends. Mold is a fact of life here in Florida. And if your
air conditioning system is older than six or eight years, you probably have some mold in it.
Is it harmful? Most of the molds that grow in air conditioners are of the harmless type.
But even these relatively “harmless” molds cause allergy sufferers a lot of misery.
Chances are, if nobody in your home is the allergic type, you’re not even going to know it’s there.
Mold likes to grow in the air handler unit. That’s the inside part of your a/c system.
The air handler is very wet inside, and dark….ideal conditions to grow mold. Standing
water in the drain pans also grows fungus, which clogs drain lines and adds to dirty indoor air quality.
So, most molds are going to grow for years undetected. Regular checkups by a good a/c technician would
expose these types of molds.
If someone in your family does suffer from seasonal allergies, their condition is going to be aggravated by mold growing in the HVAC. If nobody in your family is allergic, you will still have poor indoor air quality
if you have mold growing in your a/c.
Mold does not often grow in the ducts because there is no dampness to feed it. Mold is pretty much isolated to the air handler unit. Household dust can accumulate in the ducts, but dust is nothing like mold in terms of allergens.
How do I get rid of this mold?
The only effective way to remove mold is with ultraviolet light. Spraying chemicals on it will slow it down temporarily, but mold will always grow back. An ultraviolet light air purifier installed inside the air handler will kill mold on a continuous basis. This is powerful light which stays on around the clock, whether the unit is running or not.
Ultraviolet light will also destroy fungus, algae, germs, and any other organisms. This keeps the inside of the
air handler free of mold growing inside the coil, on the walls of the unit, and inside the drain pan.
How does UV light work?
My understanding as an a/c contractor (not a scientist) is that uv light disrupts the DNA of the organism, which destroys it.
How long is UV light good for?
Most uv light systems come with a warranty on the components. The bulbs should be changed once a year. I have been installing ultraviolet light sytems for about ten years now and I have found them to be very efffective. I use one in my own home and my machine is mold free.
